Rooted in Oaxaca: The Story Behind Our SS25 Collection

A Landscape of Color and Culture

Inspiration doesn’t always arrive with fanfare. Sometimes, it’s in the quiet beauty of a painted landscape or the layered colors of a summer afternoon. Our SS25 collection is a love letter to Oaxaca—its terrain, its people, its heritage—and the vibrant spirit that weaves them all together.

Oaxaca is more than a location—it’s a living mosaic of ecosystems, Indigenous languages, ancestral craft, community, and cuisine. For this collection, we looked to all of these elements for inspiration, grounding our design process in the textures, traditions, and colors that make this region unforgettable.

The Painting That Sparked a Palette

To guide the color story of SS25, we turned to a piece of Mexican history: an 1887 landscape painting by José María Velasco, a celebrated artist and scientist known for capturing the essence of Mexico’s geography and spirit. His work depicted more than land—it captured life itself: native flora, rural daily scenes, and a deep sense of place.

The particular piece that inspired us portrays the early cityscape of Oaxaca over 130 years ago. From the soft pinks of adobe homes to the deep blues of mountain ranges and the muted greens of desert flora, Velasco’s brushwork gave us a natural palette rich with story.

Color Through Collaboration

With the palette defined, we sat down with the artisans to choose the symbols that would bring the collection to life—many of which are rooted in the ancient visual language of Oaxaca. Some motifs are drawn directly from the ruins of Mitla and Monte Albán, reflecting centuries of Zapotec tradition and cultural storytelling. (Learn more about the meanings behind these designs here.)

As always, the creative process is shared—woven through conversation, intuition, and care. Our design and weaving partners exchanged ideas, adapted, refined. The results were not always exact, but that’s part of the beauty. What emerged was richer: a reflection of many hands, minds, and voices working together.

We embrace the organic shifts that happen when tradition and design meet. Color may vary. Opinions may differ. That’s the strength of this collaboration—every piece carries not just beauty, but the imprint of real dialogue and collective creativity.
